When the oldest ecological material in human history — leather — meets a material of the future.
Caulaincourt joins forces for the first time with NUNOUS Japan, creator of an innovative textile material born from upcycling. This collaboration gives rise to a rare piece: a card holder combining hand-patinated full-grain leather with NUNOUS SKIN, the marbled surface layer of the NUNOUS material.

NUNOUS: transforming the invisible into exceptional material

Every year, the Japanese textile industry generates millions of square meters of “non-conforming” fabrics — unusable for commercial purposes and typically destined for shredding or incineration.
NUNOUS, developed by SEISHOKU, a Japanese textile company founded 140 years ago, offers a visionary alternative: giving a second life to these forgotten textiles.

Through a patented process, the fabrics are compressed and stabilized without losing their original color or texture.
The result is a durable, resilient, naturally water-resistant material with an organic visual quality reminiscent at times of abstract paintings, at others of mineral strata.

No two pieces are alike.
With NUNOUS, an invisible waste becomes a noble material — beautiful, visible, and meaningful.

NUNOUS SKIN: a living canvas

The version used in our collaboration, NUNOUS SKIN, is the surface cut of the material, composed in part from Japanese denim fabrics.
It reveals marbled, fluid, almost hand-painted patterns. Its variations evoke the movements of water, the swell of the sea, or the depth of a mineral landscape.
This organic dimension makes every cut entirely unique.

A collaboration with purpose

The sea stands at the heart of today’s global ecological challenges.
By combining an upcycled Japanese material with our French artisanal savoir-faire, we sought to create an object that embodies a shared conviction:
preserve what exists, elevate what we produce, reduce what we waste.

This collaboration brings together three core values:
• Responsibility, by transforming textile waste into a resource;
• Creativity, by elevating an unprecedented material;
• Craftsmanship, by giving each piece its own identity.

A limited edition: 20 pieces inspired by the sea

In echo to the singular nature of the material and its aesthetic, Caulaincourt has created a limited edition of 20 pieces, each one patinated by hand in our workshops.
The leather sections are treated like true miniatures:
a calm sea, a turbulent sea, a colorful sea…
Every piece expresses a variation, a movement, a mood —
just like the sea itself: never quite the same, never perfectly still.

This artistic approach naturally resonates with the NUNOUS SKIN patterns, which also evoke the ripples and undulations of water.
